Pintels (or pintles) - the "pins" on which hinges swing. There are two styles of pintels in our product line. The first is a Pintel plate that has a flat base to screw to the house. The second is a Lag Pintel that screws into the casing or window frame. Both styles have pin that actual serves as the 'hinge pivot" mechanism. | |||
| Hinges -
Mate with the Pintels and are mounted on the Shutter to allow the shutter to swing
open and close.. | |||
| A method to hold the shutter flat against the house when not closing to protect the window is accomplished with some sort of hold back. We offer two methods. The first is the Shutter Dog which is an S Hold Back in which the lower half of the S is larger so the weight holds the Shutter Dog in the upright position and can be rotated by hand to allow the shutter to be pulled away from the house and positioned over the window. The second hold back method is a Hook and Eye. | |||
| General Terminology and Measurements Standoff is quite important. Virtually all commercially available shutter hardware is provided with matching standoff on the shutter hinges and pintel. This assumes that the face of the shutter will lie on the same plane as the casement with the shutter in the closed position. This seldom happens in contemporary construction - incorrect hardware is installed - the homeowner hears "well, you'll never close them anyway". However with today increased hurricanes functional shutters serve a very important need. Window Frame or Casement - the wood or brick surrounding the window where Pintel is typically mounted or fastened.Surface Mounted - Hinges that mount to the face of the Shutter and the Casement - Straps and the "New York Style" hinges are examples. Offset - This is the total measurement from the Casement to the outermost surface of the Shutter. Our Hardware and Pintels are available in 1/2 ", 1 ½", and 2 ½" offsets. The offset is developed in hardware by selection a pintel made to "stand off" the casement a given distance - the hinge has a sharp bend which moves the hinge barrel away from the face of the shutter at a distance to match the pintel standoff. However in some situations a mismatch of offsets may better fit specific types of installations. When measuring offset, it is critical to allow for irregularities
in construction. Brick and stone openings are rarely plumb and never perfectly
flat - look for the greatest dimension and allow about ½" cushion.
If the offset is too small the shutters will not open fully - if the offset is
too great, the shutter will function well and sit off of the wall a bit. I feel
its good practice to set the shutters at least 1" off the face of the structure
to allow air circulation across the back of the shutter. At Home Products n' More, always remember that every price in our store is the total price because SHIPPING IS FREE on all our shutter hinges and corresponding hardware
